The Search for Peer Firms: When Do Crowds Provide Wisdom?
نویسندگان
چکیده
In knowledge-based economies, many businesses enterprises defy traditional industry boundaries. In this study, we evaluate six “big data” approaches to peer firm identifications and show that some, but not all, “wisdom-of-crowd” techniques perform exceptionally well. We propose an analytical framework for understanding when crowds can be expected to provide wisdom and show, theoretically and empirically, that their efficacy is related to crowd sophistication and task complexity. Consistent with this framework, we find that a “crowd-of-crowds” approach, which combines EDGAR user co-searches and analyst co-coverage, dominates other stateof-the-art methods for identifying investment benchmarks. متن کاملFrom the wisdom of crowds to my own judgment in microfinance through online peer-to-peer lending platforms
Information asymmetry is one of the fundamental problems that online peer-to-peer (P2P) lending platforms face. This problem becomes more acute when platforms are used for microfinance, where the targeted customers are mostly economically under-privileged people. Most of the prior empirical studies have been based on data from Prosper.com or similar sites that compete in traditional consumer lo...
متن کاملPeer Produced Innovation: An Exploration Of 'The Wisdom Of Crowds' In Virtual Worlds
While researchers have examined the role of individuals in crowdsourcing for open innovation purposes (wisdom in crowds) there is a gap in our understanding of the collective intelligence of communities for such purposes (wisdom of crowds). The objective of this exploratory study is therefore to explore the peer production of innovation; specifically the challenges in leveraging the collective ...
متن کاملIntuitive Biases in Choice versus Estimation: Implications for the Wisdom of Crowds
Although researchers have documented many instances of crowd wisdom, it is important to know whether some kinds of judgments may lead the crowd astray, whether crowds’ judgments improve with feedback over time, and whether crowds’ judgments can be improved by changing the way judgments are elicited. We investigated these questions in a sports gambling context (predictions against point spreads)...
